The Studio

In the hinterland behind Byron Bay …

In 1990 Samantha and Damien moved to the Far North Coast of New South Wales.

'Little Scrub', their six acre property behind Australia’s easternmost tip, Byron Bay, is a botanical haven. The artists have planted over 20,000 trees native to The Big Scrub rainforest, which once covered the entire region.  The land is covered in rich red volcanic soil which means that some of the cabinet species have prolific growth.

The architect designed zincalume house, cottage and studio were all built by Damien.  Each building was developed to touch the earth lightly.  They are environmentally sustainable and designed to maximize the elements in a passive way capturing the wind, sun and rain for the use of the occupants without the dependence on external services.

In many ways, the artists' home is one of Damien's finest creative projects.

We have given the land back its dignity. Our work speaks to the audience in Nature’s silent voice. – Damien Naughton

Visitors are welcome to make an appointment to view Samantha and Damien’s artworks, the studio where they are created, and the magnificent garden.
